Amazon Sword (Echinodorus species)

Appearance & Growth

Create a bold green focal point with Amazon Sword. Broad, lance-shaped leaves rise from a central rosette, gradually developing into a lush plant with an extensive root system. Small fish can weave between the leaves while shrimp browse their surfaces for biofilm. Several Echinodorus forms are sold under this common name, so mature size and leaf shape can vary.

Size & Placement

Best suited to the background or as a centerpiece in a spacious aquarium. Allow generous room for its leaf span and root system rather than crowding it against neighboring plants. Mature plants can shade shorter growth, making this a better choice for roomy layouts than compact foreground planting.

Compatible Tankmates

  • Peaceful community fish that appreciate broad-leaved cover
  • Dwarf shrimp, which graze biofilm from the leaves
  • Plant-safe snails such as nerites
  • Use caution with: vigorous diggers and large plant-eating fish that may uproot the plant or damage foliage

Planted-Tank Role

Amazon Sword adds height and broad-leaved structure behind driftwood, rocks, and smaller plants. An established specimen creates a natural focal point and sheltered spaces for aquarium inhabitants. Healthy growth contributes to nutrient uptake but does not replace filtration or regular water changes. Plan around its mature footprint to preserve swimming space and light for neighboring plants.

Lighting & Nutrition

  • Lighting: moderate aquarium lighting is a practical starting point. Ensure light reaches the plant without heavy shade from floating or taller growth.
  • Photoperiod: start with 6–8 hours daily and adjust to plant response and algae growth.
  • Root nutrition: provide nutrient-rich substrate or aquarium root tabs used according to their label in plain sand or gravel. Established swords benefit from a consistent supply of nutrients around their roots.
  • Fertilizer: a complete aquarium plant fertilizer can supplement nutrients in the water.
  • CO2: injection is not essential in many setups, though balanced supplementation can support growth.
  • Avoid excessive fertilizer or abrupt lighting increases intended to force rapid growth.

Water Conditions

  • Maintain stable tropical freshwater conditions.
  • Avoid abrupt changes in temperature, water chemistry, lighting, or CO2 supply.
  • Provide gentle circulation around the leaves and base.
  • Remove accumulated debris without disturbing the established root system.

Planting Guidance

  • Remove any pot, packing wool, bands, or weights carefully. If supplied as tissue culture, rinse away the growing gel.
  • Preserve healthy roots and remove only damaged or decaying material as needed.
  • Make enough room in the substrate to place the roots without tightly folding or crushing them.
  • Bury the roots while keeping the crown, where leaves meet the roots, at or just above the substrate surface.
  • Leave generous space around the plant for mature foliage.
  • Choose its position thoughtfully; repeatedly uprooting an established sword can disturb both the plant and surrounding substrate.

Trimming & Propagation

  • Remove damaged or overly large outer leaves near their base with clean scissors without injuring the crown.
  • Remove selected whole leaves rather than cutting across healthy leaf tips.
  • Some established plants produce daughter plantlets along a flower stalk.
  • Allow plantlets to develop several leaves and healthy roots before separating and planting them.
  • A detached leaf alone will not grow into a new sword plant.
  • Dispose of unwanted plants and trimmings in household waste, never in outdoor waterways.

Adjustment After Planting

Amazon Swords grown above water may shed older leaves as they produce submerged foliage with a different shape. Remove soft, decaying leaves while preserving healthy roots and the crown. Keep conditions stable, provide adequate root nutrition, and watch for fresh leaves emerging from the center. Establishment takes time, so avoid repeatedly moving the plant while it adjusts.
