Amazon Sword (Echinodorus species)
Appearance & Growth
Create a lush green centerpiece with Amazon Sword. Its long, broad leaves rise from a rooted rosette, forming a leafy backdrop where small fish can weave through the foliage and shrimp can explore for biofilm. Established plants develop substantial root systems and spreading crowns of foliage. Leaf shape and mature size vary with the variety and growing conditions.
Size & Placement
Best suited to the background or as a centerpiece in a spacious aquarium. Many Amazon Swords become large, with leaves reaching toward the surface and spreading over neighboring plants. Leave generous room around the crown and avoid placing small, light-demanding plants directly beneath its future canopy.
Compatible Tankmates
- Peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras
- Dwarf shrimp, which browse the leaves and root area for biofilm
- Plant-safe snails such as nerites
- Avoid: vigorous diggers and determined plant-eating fish that may uproot new plants or damage leaves
Planted-Tank Role
Amazon Sword provides broad-leaved structure, shelter, and shaded pockets in planted freshwater aquariums. Use it behind driftwood or as a single focal plant surrounded by shorter growth. Healthy growth contributes to nutrient uptake but does not replace filtration or routine water changes.
Lighting & Nutrition
- Lighting: moderate aquarium lighting is a useful starting point for steady growth. Keep the crown from being heavily shaded.
- Photoperiod: start with 6–8 hours daily and adjust to plant response and algae growth.
- Root nutrition: provide nutrient-rich substrate or aquarium root tabs used according to their label when growing in plain sand or gravel.
- Fertilizer: a complete aquarium plant fertilizer can supplement nutrients in the water.
- CO2: injection is not essential in many setups, though balanced supplementation can encourage growth.
- Match nutrition to active growth rather than adding extra fertilizer to force rapid development.
Water Conditions
- Maintain stable tropical freshwater conditions.
- Avoid abrupt changes in temperature, water chemistry, or lighting.
- Provide gentle circulation around the foliage and keep debris from accumulating at the base.
- Allow the root system to establish without frequent uprooting.
Planting Guidance
- Remove any pot and packing wool carefully. If supplied as tissue culture, rinse away the growing gel.
- Preserve healthy roots and spread them gently into the planting area without tightly folding or crushing them.
- Bury the roots while keeping the crown, where leaves emerge, at or just above the substrate surface.
- Do not bury the growing point or wedge the crown tightly against rocks.
- Provide enough substrate depth to anchor the plant and leave room for its extensive root system.
- Choose its position with mature growth in mind and avoid repeated relocation.
Trimming & Propagation
- Remove damaged, deteriorating, or unwanted outer leaves near their base with clean scissors, taking care not to injure the crown.
- Prefer removing whole leaves rather than cutting across healthy leaf blades.
- Established plants may produce long stalks bearing daughter plantlets.
- Allow plantlets to develop several leaves and a useful root system before separating and planting them.
- Do not treat the leaves as stem cuttings or routinely cut the crown into pieces.
- Dispose of unwanted plant material in household waste, never in outdoor waterways.
Adjustment After Planting
Amazon Swords grown above water may lose some older leaves after being submerged, then produce new foliage with a different shape. Remove soft, decaying leaves while leaving a firm, healthy crown and roots undisturbed. Maintain stable conditions and adequate root nutrition, and watch for new leaves from the center as the plant settles in.
