Cryptocoryne Lutea (Cryptocoryne walkeri 'Lutea', also sold as Cryptocoryne lutea)
Appearance & Growth
Add a natural leafy accent with Cryptocoryne Lutea. Its elongated leaves rise from a rooted rosette, bringing green to olive tones that may develop brownish shading depending on growing conditions. Established plants gradually form attractive clumps where shrimp browse for biofilm and small fish find cover. Leaf shape, coloration, and growth rate vary as the plant adapts to its aquarium.
Size & Placement
Well suited to the midground or as a larger foreground accent in spacious layouts. Leave room around each rosette for mature foliage and daughter plants. Use small groups near rocks or driftwood without crowding the crowns or shading them beneath dense neighboring growth.
Compatible Tankmates
- Small, peaceful community fish such as tetras and rasboras
- Dwarf shrimp, which graze among the leaves
- Plant-safe snails such as nerites
- Avoid: vigorous diggers and determined plant-eaters that may uproot rosettes or damage foliage
Planted-Tank Role
Cryptocoryne Lutea provides broad-leaved contrast beside grassy plants and finely divided stems. Its clumping growth softens the transition between hardscape and open substrate. Healthy growth contributes to nutrient uptake but does not replace filtration or regular water changes. Allow time for establishment rather than expecting immediate coverage.
Lighting & Nutrition
- Lighting: low to moderate aquarium lighting is suitable. Avoid sudden increases in intensity.
- Photoperiod: start with 6–8 hours daily and adjust to plant response and algae growth.
- Root nutrition: provide nutrient-rich substrate or aquarium root tabs used according to their label in plain sand or gravel.
- Fertilizer: a complete aquarium plant fertilizer can supplement nutrients in the water.
- CO2: injection is not essential in many setups, though balanced supplementation can support growth.
- Avoid excessive fertilizer or light intended to force rapid growth.
Water Conditions
- Maintain stable tropical freshwater conditions.
- Avoid abrupt changes in temperature, water chemistry, lighting, or CO2 supply.
- Provide gentle circulation and clear debris from around the base.
- Allow roots to establish without frequent uprooting or relocation.
Planting Guidance
- Remove any pot, packing wool, bands, or weights carefully. If supplied as tissue culture, rinse away the growing gel.
- Separate individual rosettes gently where practical, preserving healthy roots.
- Bury the roots while keeping the crown, where leaves meet the roots, at or just above the substrate surface.
- Do not bury the growing point or crush the base with planting tools.
- Leave several inches between plants to allow mature foliage and daughter rosettes to develop.
- Choose its position thoughtfully and avoid repeatedly moving it after planting.
Trimming & Propagation
- Remove damaged or deteriorating outer leaves near their base with clean scissors without injuring the crown.
- Established plants spread through runners that produce daughter rosettes.
- Allow daughters to develop roots and several leaves before separating and replanting them.
- Thin crowded groups carefully rather than cutting across healthy leaf tips.
- Dispose of unwanted plants and trimmings in household waste, never in outdoor waterways.
Adjustment & Crypt Melt
Cryptocoryne may lose some or even most older leaves after planting or sudden changes in conditions, a response often called crypt melt. Remove soft, decaying leaves while leaving firm, healthy roots and the crown undisturbed. Maintain stable conditions and adequate nutrition, and watch for new submerged foliage. Recovery time varies, so avoid repeatedly uprooting the plant while it adjusts.
