Moneywort (Bacopa monnieri)

Appearance & Growth

Bring fresh green color and a clean, upright shape to your aquascape with Moneywort. Its fleshy, rounded leaves grow in opposite pairs along sturdy stems, creating a pleasing contrast with fine-leaved plants and grassy foregrounds. As a group fills out, small fish can weave between the stems while shrimp explore the leaves for biofilm.

Size & Placement

Best suited to the midground or background, with height managed through regular trimming. Stems can reach the surface and continue growing above the water when conditions allow. Plant in a loose group for a fuller display, leaving enough space for light to reach the lower leaves.

Compatible Tankmates

  • Small, peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras
  • Dwarf shrimp, which graze biofilm on the foliage
  • Plant-safe snails such as nerites
  • Avoid: vigorous diggers and determined plant-eating fish that may uproot stems or damage leaves

Planted-Tank Role

Moneywort adds vertical structure behind rocks, wood, and shorter plants. Its rounded foliage softens hardscape edges and provides cover for small aquarium residents. Healthy growth contributes to nutrient uptake, but does not replace filtration or routine water changes.

Lighting & Nutrition

  • Lighting: moderate aquarium lighting is a useful starting point. Heavy shade can lead to sparse growth and loss of lower leaves.
  • Photoperiod: start with 6–8 hours daily and adjust to plant response and algae growth.
  • Fertilizer: a complete aquarium plant fertilizer used according to its label can support healthy growth.
  • Substrate: a plant-friendly substrate helps stems anchor and develop roots; root nutrition can supplement water-column feeding.
  • CO2: injection is not essential in many setups, though balanced supplementation can encourage stronger growth.
  • Keep light and nutrient supply balanced rather than increasing light alone to force faster growth.

Water Conditions

  • Adaptable to a range of stable freshwater aquarium conditions.
  • Avoid abrupt changes in temperature, water chemistry, or lighting.
  • Provide gentle circulation through the stem group without bending or dislodging newly planted cuttings.
  • Remove trapped debris and decaying leaves during regular maintenance.

Planting Guidance

  • Remove any bands, weights, pot, or packing wool carefully. If supplied as tissue culture, rinse away the growing gel.
  • Separate stems gently and remove leaves from the short section that will sit below the substrate.
  • Plant individual stems with one or more bare lower nodes beneath the substrate, keeping the remaining leaves exposed.
  • Leave space between stems so light and water can reach the lower foliage; avoid burying an entire bundle together.
  • Allow new roots to establish before repeatedly moving or trimming the plants.

Trimming & Propagation

  • Use clean, sharp scissors to trim stems just above a leaf node when they reach your preferred height.
  • Healthy rooted stems can develop side shoots after trimming, helping the group become fuller.
  • Replant healthy top cuttings with several leaf nodes, removing the lowest leaves before inserting the bare base into the substrate.
  • Thin crowded growth to prevent upper foliage from shading the lower stems.
  • Replace bare or deteriorating stem bases with healthy cuttings when needed.
  • Dispose of unwanted plants and trimmings in household waste, never in outdoor waterways.

Adjustment After Planting

Some older leaves may decline as Moneywort adjusts to a new aquarium, especially when transitioning from above-water growth. Remove soft or decaying material while preserving firm, healthy stems. Maintain stable conditions and watch for fresh leaves and roots as the plant settles in.
