Water Wisteria (Hygrophila difformis)
Appearance & Growth
Bring bright green, feathery texture to your aquarium with Water Wisteria. Its deeply divided submerged leaves form a soft, leafy backdrop where small fish can explore and shrimp can browse for biofilm. This adaptable stem plant can grow quickly when conditions are favorable, developing branching growth that benefits from regular trimming. Leaves grown above water may look broader and less divided than the foliage produced underwater.
Size & Placement
Best suited to the background or a regularly trimmed midground group. Allow space for broad leaves and branching stems rather than squeezing plants into a dense bunch. Untrimmed growth can reach the surface and shade neighboring plants. Height and leaf shape vary with growing conditions.
Compatible Tankmates
- Small, peaceful community fish such as tetras and rasboras
- Dwarf shrimp that browse among the fine foliage
- Plant-safe snails such as nerites
- Avoid: determined plant-eaters and vigorous diggers that may damage leaves or dislodge newly planted stems
Planted-Tank Role
Water Wisteria adds volume and fine texture behind broad-leaved plants, rocks, and driftwood. Branching growth provides cover and can help fill open background areas. Healthy growth takes up nutrients, but does not replace filtration or regular water changes. Thin crowded stems to preserve circulation and light around lower leaves.
Lighting & Nutrition
- Lighting: moderate aquarium lighting is a practical starting point for leafy, branching growth. Heavy shade can lead to sparse lower stems.
- Photoperiod: start with 6–8 hours daily and adjust to plant response and algae growth.
- Fertilizer: a complete aquarium plant fertilizer used according to its label can support this actively growing plant.
- Root nutrition: nutrient-rich substrate or labeled aquarium root tabs can supplement nutrition in plain sand or gravel.
- CO2: injection is not essential in many setups, though balanced supplementation can encourage fuller, faster growth.
- Balance light with nutrients and available CO2 rather than increasing brightness alone.
Water Conditions
- Maintain stable tropical freshwater conditions.
- Avoid abrupt changes in temperature, water chemistry, lighting, or CO2 supply.
- Provide gentle circulation through the planting without bending or uprooting stems.
- Remove debris and decaying leaves during routine maintenance.
Planting Guidance
- Remove any pot, packing wool, bands, or weights carefully. If supplied as tissue culture, rinse away the growing gel.
- Separate healthy stems and remove leaves only from the lower section that will be buried.
- Plant each stem individually, anchoring the lower bare section in the substrate while keeping healthy foliage exposed.
- Leave a few inches between stems so light and water can reach the lower leaves.
- Avoid crushing stems or burying leafy tops.
- Roots may develop along stem nodes; these are normal and can help anchor growing plants.
Trimming & Propagation
- Use clean scissors to trim tall stems above a healthy node, leaving a healthy rooted base to produce side shoots.
- Replant healthy top cuttings with several nodes, removing leaves from the portion to be buried.
- Thin crowded branches to reduce shading and maintain the desired shape.
- Remove deteriorating lower sections and replace them with healthy cuttings when needed.
- Collect loose fragments promptly so they do not lodge in equipment or grow in unwanted areas.
- Seal unwanted plants and trimmings in a bag for household-waste disposal. Never release them outdoors or rinse fragments into drains.
Adjustment After Planting
Older leaves may change or deteriorate as the plant adjusts from above-water production to aquarium growth. New submerged leaves can look noticeably more divided than the original foliage. Remove soft, decaying material, keep conditions stable, and judge progress by healthy new shoots. Avoid repeatedly uprooting stems while they establish.
